What is a healthy sexual relationship?

Healthy sexual relationships practice good consent, this includes free, voluntary, non-coerced choices. If you kiss or have sex with someone because they threaten, pressure, or persuade you into doing it; this is not consensual.

Communication:

The easiest and safest way to make sure you partner is happy and consenting is to use verbal communication. Ask what they like, if they are okay and make sure they understand they can stop at any time.

Your partner should have open body language, this might include relaxed facial expressions, eye contact, and being actively engaged / taking part in the sexual activity. If you are not sure about what their body language is telling you then stop and ask. Check they are happy and want to continue.

It might seem awkward at first to have these conversations, but it helps make sure everyone is safe and happy.

Respect:

There should be respect for each other and your decisions. If you don’t want to do a sexual activity, then your partner should accept this.

Likewise, if your partner doesn’t want to do something you should be respectful of their choice. Healthy relationships are based on mutual respect and consent.

Honesty:

Try to be honest when talking to your partner about consent. Good communication leads to enjoyable and healthy sexual relationships.

Good communication and mutual respect are key to a healthy sexual relationship.

Consent is about more than just the law and what is illegal or not. It is a value we should all hold in healthy relationships. It is about treating each other well and being respectful to each other too.
